World Telecommunication Day will be celebrated on Wednesday

May 17 is World Telecommunication Day. The current government sees the observance of the day as particularly significant for Bangladesh, which is moving ahead with its plan to transform from digital to smart Bangladesh. With the advent of the fifth technology in telecommunications, the existing problems and potential of the sector will come to the fore.

 Government and private institutions and organizations have taken the initiative to celebrate the day with other countries of the world under the theme of 'Development of information and communication technology and empowerment of less developed countries'.

The Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar will be present as the chief guest at the main event of the day at Osmani Smriti Auditorium in the capital under the joint initiative of Department of Posts and Telecommunications, BTRC and ITU.

BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikdar will deliver the welcome address on the occasion. The Post and Telecommunication Secretary Abu Hena Morshed Zaman will preside over the program. While the Additional Secretary Md. Mahbub Ul Alam and Bangabandhu Digital University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam will discuss on the theme of the day.

Chairman of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited Dr. Shahjahan Mahmud and AKM Rahmatullah, member of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology will also be present as a special guests.

In this regard, on the occasion of the day, awareness leaflets will be distributed on different roads by the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association.

In a statement, the president of the organization Mohiuddin Ahmed and general secretary Advocate Abubakkar Siddique congratulated all mobile phone subscribers, internet users, countrymen, media persons, government and regulatory commissions and MNOs of the country.  

In a message, the President of the Mobile Phone Consumers Association said that despite the reduction in the cost of bandwidth, the people are yet to reap the benefits, the main obstacles being the high tax system and encroachment on middle ground. Half of the country's population is still deprived of smartphone use. Misuse of telecommunication is increasing day by day. Therefore, the main task of our organization will be to make the people aware on World Telecommunication Day.

It may be noted that, this day was declared as the World Telecommunication Day on May 17 through a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly after the 2005 World Conference on Information Society held in Tunis. The day was previously known as World Telecommunication Day, commemorating the founding of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17, 1865.
